The short answer

Secret Santa is a strange kind of gift-buying. You are shopping for a colleague you may barely know, under a hard price cap, and the gift gets opened in front of everybody. The usual advice — "get them something personal" — is useless, because you do not know them well enough to be personal. What you actually need is a gift that reads as thoughtful and correct to a room full of people, and that the recipient genuinely takes home and uses.

Hunting is an unusually good category for this. It is gear-heavy and full of small, consumable, useful things, which means the sub-$25 end is not the bargain bin — it is where a lot of a hunter's real kit actually lives. A pocket sharpener, a pack of hand warmers, a good beanie: these are things hunters buy for themselves every season and are always glad to be handed.

Every pick below sits comfortably under a typical $25 cap and shows a live price, so you can see exactly where it lands before you commit. They run roughly cheapest first. If your exchange is a gag-gift exchange rather than a real one, funny hunting gifts is the better starting point, and if the cap turns out to be higher than you thought, step up to hunting gifts under $50.

HotHands Hand Warmers (Value Pack) product photo
Under $25

HotHands Hand Warmers (Value Pack)

The cheapest thing on this page and, honestly, one of the most used. Air-activated warmers go in a glove, a boot or a coat pocket, and a hunter sitting still in the cold burns through them every season. A value pack looks generous for the money, and there is no size, color or taste to get wrong. If your cap is tight, buy these and put the difference toward better wrapping.

Funny Hunting Socks (Gift Set) product photo
Under $25

Funny Hunting Socks (Gift Set)

A gift-boxed set of hunting-themed novelty socks is the rare joke gift that still gets worn. It reads as light-hearted when it is opened in front of the room, which is what you want in an office exchange, and it is not landfill afterward. Safe for anyone: socks need no hand size, no draw length and no knowledge of what they hunt.

Primos Hardwood Grunter Deer Call product photo
Under $25

Primos Hardwood Grunter Deer Call

A deer call is the pick that signals you thought about the hunting part, and it costs less than lunch. This one is a simple hardwood grunt tube - the kind of thing a deer hunter either uses or keeps in the truck. One sanity check: it suits a deer hunter specifically, so if you are not sure what they chase, choose something further down this list instead.

Smith's PP1 Pocket Pal Knife Sharpener product photo
Under $25

Smith's PP1 Pocket Pal Knife Sharpener

About the size of a pocket knife, takes no skill at all to use, and it fixes the single most common complaint a hunter has about their own gear: a dull blade. It quietly says you know something about the hobby without pretending to be an expert. Nothing to size, nothing to match, and it fits in the pack they already carry.

EverBrite Rechargeable Headlamp (Red/Green/White) product photo
Under $25

EverBrite Rechargeable Headlamp (Red/Green/White)

Hunters walk in before sunrise and out after dark, and a rechargeable headlamp with a red mode is standard kit for exactly that reason - red light does not wreck night vision the way white does. This one costs very little and earns its keep the other fifty-one weeks of the year too, in the garage, the attic and a power cut. Hard to get wrong.

"World's Okayest Hunter" Coffee Mug product photo
Under $25

"World's Okayest Hunter" Coffee Mug

Self-deprecating humor is the register hunting camp actually runs in, so this lands as a joke the recipient is in on rather than one at their expense. The reason it makes this list over most novelty gifts is simple: it is a mug, so it gets used every morning long after the party is forgotten. Good when you want a laugh in the room and a keeper afterward.

Lansky BladeMedic 4-in-1 Pocket Sharpener product photo
Under $25

Lansky BladeMedic 4-in-1 Pocket Sharpener

Four sharpeners in one pocket-size tool, including a rod that fits serrations and gut hooks - the shapes an ordinary flat sharpener cannot reach. This is the step up from the Smith's above if your cap has a little room: same idea, more capability, still tiny. A genuinely practical gift, and not one a hunter is likely to already own two of.

RTIC 20 oz Tumbler product photo
Under $25

RTIC 20 oz Tumbler

Our top overall pick here, and the one we would hand a nervous buyer. An insulated tumbler keeps coffee hot through a freezing morning, works just as well for someone who only commutes, and is instantly recognizable as a real product rather than exchange filler. No sizing, no preferences, no way to offend anyone. If you want one answer and no further thinking, this is it.

North Mountain Gear Stretch Fit Hunting Gloves product photo
Under $25

North Mountain Gear Stretch Fit Hunting Gloves

Thin camo gloves with grippy palms, made one-size-fits-most - which is the whole reason they make a Secret Santa list when most gloves do not. They suit gun and bow hunters equally, and they are the layer a hunter loses and replaces constantly. Useful, cheap, and nobody is ever annoyed to receive a spare pair.

Carhartt Knit Cuffed Beanie product photo
Under $25

Carhartt Knit Cuffed Beanie

Our safest bet on the page. A warm knit hat from a brand every outdoorsman already respects, in one size, with no way to misjudge it. It gets worn to work, to the woods and to the shop, and it looks like a considered gift rather than a gift-card substitute. If the person is an unknown quantity and you want zero risk, buy this.

Morakniv Companion Fixed-Blade Knife product photo
Under $25

Morakniv Companion Fixed-Blade Knife

The most impressive-for-the-money thing on this list. This small Swedish fixed blade arrives razor-sharp and is genuinely respected by people who know knives, which is why it reads as a far more expensive gift than it is. One caveat specific to office exchanges: think about whether a blade suits your workplace and your recipient before you buy - see the note below.

HOT SHOT Razorback Reversible Hand Muff product photo
Under $25

HOT SHOT Razorback Reversible Hand Muff

A belted fleece hand warmer worn at the waist, so it is one-size-fits-everyone by design. It is the pick here most buyers have never seen, which makes it feel discovered rather than grabbed off a shelf, and it reverses from camo to blaze orange. Best for someone you know sits still in the cold - a deer or duck hunter rather than a walker.

How to spend a $25 cap well

The mistake almost everyone makes under a cap is buying a cheap version of an expensive thing — a $20 imitation of a $200 item. It looks like exactly what it is. The better move is to buy a good version of a cheap thing. A quality pocket sharpener, a proper beanie, a real insulated tumbler and a value pack of hand warmers are all complete, uncompromised products at this price. Nothing about them is a compromise, so nothing about them reads as budget.

The second move, if your cap allows it, is to pair two small things. A cheap fixed-blade knife plus a pocket sharpener is a better gift than either on its own, because together they look like a set somebody assembled on purpose. Warm gloves plus hand warmers do the same job. If that idea appeals, we have a whole page on building hunting gift baskets out of small picks.

The four picks that work when you know nothing

If all you know is "they hunt," stay away from anything that has to match a specific animal, a specific weapon or a specific body measurement. That rules out calls (species-specific), broadheads (bow-specific) and most clothing (sized). What is left is still plenty: the tumbler, the beanie, the pocket sharpener and the hand warmers. Every one of those suits a deer hunter, a duck hunter, a bowhunter and someone who mostly just talks about hunting — which is the honest situation in a lot of offices.

If you do happen to know what they chase, you can do better. A grunt call for a deer hunter is a far more personal gift than a beanie. We sort ideas that way on our gifts by hunter type pages.

Secret Santa and white elephant are not the same brief

These two exchanges get lumped together and they reward opposite things. In a Secret Santayou are buying for one named person, and the gift is judged on whether it suits them — so useful beats funny, and the picks above are the right shape.

In a white elephantor steal-style exchange nobody has a name, and every gift has to appeal to the whole room, because the fun of the game is people fighting over it. That rewards something visual and instantly readable: the novelty socks, the mug, the hand muff nobody has seen before. Skip the sharpener — it is arguably the best gift on this page and it will be the one nobody steals, because it does not read across a room. For a full run at that brief, see funny hunting gifts.

What to skip

Three categories reliably disappoint in a capped exchange. Scent and lures are cheap and genuinely used by deer hunters, but they smell strongly enough that opening a bottle in an office is a memorable mistake. Sized clothing beyond one-size items means either asking and spoiling the surprise, or guessing and being wrong in front of everyone. Anything weapon-specific— broadheads, arrows, a cleaning kit for a particular caliber — needs knowledge you do not have about gear you have never seen.

One honest note on gift cards: they are not a failure of imagination, and for a colleague you truly do not know they can be the correct answer. We wrote about when they work and when they read as lazy in are gift cards a good gift for hunters.

If your exchange runs in November

Office exchanges are usually drawn in November and opened in December, which means the buying window overlaps the year's biggest sale period. If you have any flexibility on timing, our Black Friday and Cyber Monday hunting gear page tracks which of these picks are actually discounted right now, and is honest about which categories barely move at all.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Secret Santa gift for a hunter under $25?

An insulated tumbler, a Carhartt knit beanie, a pocket knife sharpener or a value pack of hand warmers are the four safest picks - all genuinely used by hunters, and none of them require you to know a size or what they hunt. A Morakniv Companion fixed-blade knife is the most impressive for the money, if a blade suits your workplace.

I don't know what they hunt. Does it matter?

For most of this list, no. Only the deer call is species-specific. Tumblers, beanies, sharpeners, headlamps, gloves and hand warmers are used by every kind of hunter, so you can buy confidently knowing nothing more than that they hunt.

Is a knife an appropriate Secret Santa gift?

Often yes, but check first. Some workplaces restrict bringing blades onto the premises, and some exchanges include people who would rather not watch one opened. If there is any doubt, a tumbler, a beanie or a pocket sharpener gets you the same thoughtful-gift result with none of the awkwardness.

What is the difference between a Secret Santa gift and a white elephant gift?

Secret Santa means you drew one named person, so the gift should suit them - useful beats funny. White elephant means the gift goes into a pool and gets stolen, so it has to appeal to the whole room, and something visual and immediately funny wins. The novelty socks and the mug work for white elephant; the sharpener is the better Secret Santa gift and a poor white elephant one.

Should I just get a gift card instead?

For a colleague you genuinely do not know, a gift card is defensible and better than a bad guess. But at this price a hunter gets more out of a real object they would not have bought themselves - hand warmers, a sharpener, a beanie - because those are the small things hunters constantly run out of and never restock.

Can I combine two of these to hit the cap exactly?

Yes, and it is usually the better gift. A cheap fixed-blade knife plus a pocket sharpener, or gloves plus hand warmers, reads as a deliberately assembled set rather than one cheap item. Check both live prices before you buy, since they move day to day.
